Last weekend I got to take a trip to a place I have dreamed of going to my whole life. We got to take a trip to Venice. The experience was so surreal because it was a life long dream of mine to go to this city and take a gondola ride.
When we got there we immediately went on a tour of the city going down all the small streets hearing about the history of the city from a local. We ended our tour at the famous Saint Mark's Square in front of Saint Mark's Basilica. The amount of people gathered in Saint Mark's square made it clear that this was a popular city to be in. The beautiful church is one of the oldest structures in Venice and is one of the most popular tourist attractions. People wait in line for three hours to see the inside of this church.
Another important part of Venice would of course be the gondola rides. This is synonymous with the city and it's the reason why people come from all over the world to see it. The water is so beautiful and blue when you look out into the harbor from the gondola. I knew that this might have been the only time I was in Venice so I had to go on a gondola ride and I recommend it to anyone who goes there because it's a once in a lifetime experience.
If you have free time after that I also recommend window shopping in the small streets around the city. There are lots of great souvenirs, namely, the famous Venetian masks. Venice is home to one of the largest Carnivale celebrations in February, and it's common to wear a mask during this celebration. If you go there, you might want to stop into a shop and get one. Just make sure it's not too expensive, there are plenty of tourist traps there!
The best part of the whole trip was going down one of the smaller streets with my friend. We found a spot where the gondolas swam past. We got some gelato and watched as the boats flowed past. It was honestly one of the most peaceful times in my life and I felt so grateful to be there.
